Background
Cicely Mary Barker (1895 - 1973) was an English artist who created the
famous Flower Fairies - happy children with butterfly-style wings
alongside botanically accurate depictions of their particular flower.
Flower Fairies are tiny creatures that live in gardens, grassy meadows and on
distant marches. Each Flower Fairy lives in their chosen flower, plant or
tree and as it grows the fairy grows too. Flower Fairies are very shy
creatures who have extra sensitive ears and an outfit made out of their own
leaves and flowers so it's easy for them to hide.
Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairy paintings originally became well known in
1911 when they were reproduced as greeting cards by the stationer, Raphael
Tuck. They were later turned in to a series of books and are
now shown on many household objects and have been very popular in
the cross stitch market for many years.
