Fidelity Sampler
This design is inspired by a fine collection of 17th to 19th century needlework at East Riddlesden Hall, Yorkshire, a property of the National Trust. "Fidelity" is epitomised by several traditional motifs and symbols in the sampler; the peacock was fabled to die of grief if its mate died; the greyhound was often depicted as a symbol of faithfulness, or in heraldry loyalty as a royal supporter. The crown is a frequent design in samplers and as with heraldic devices could symbolise fealty to the monarchy perhaps through the family's own aristocratic ancestry. Flowers and fruits were often used to give symbolic meaning to Christian values and teachings. The rose (in the border) became the flower of heavenly or divine love and likewise cherubs or angels denoted religious devotion.
Kit contains 14 count fabric, pre-sorted DMC stranded cotton, needle, chart and illustrated instructions. Sewn size: 9¾ x 9¼ in.; 25 x 23.5 cm.
